First, the spark plug wires need to be the gray inductive resistor wires - these are not automotive wires. Secondly, the spark plugs should be the factory recommended QL78YC. Use of other spark plugs or wires can cause problems inside the power pack from RFI and MFI noise. CDI Electronics has the spark plug wires available as a set P/N: 931-4921. If the pack only fires when you remove the plug connectorcontaining the kill wires, use a jumper Wire to connect the killwires in the pack. If the pack still fires, there is a problem inthe Harness, safety circuit or Ignition switch. A no firesituation with the jumper in place indicates a bad pack. Check the support parts. Examine all the connections and wires connected to the power pack. Tighten all loose connections and make sure the components connected to the power pack are functioning correctly. Step 2 9. Disconnect the ignition coils from the old power pack and reconnect them to the new power pack. 10. Install the new power pack and ignition coils. (Take care not to over-torque the mounting bolts, OEM specification calls for 50-95 in lbs of torque). Make sure the RF Noise Shield is between the ignition coils and the power pack. 11. Note: Prior to 2000 the CDI was factory configured with direct connection to battery power. Service Bulletin PWC-00-05 modifies all 1996-1999 to match the factory configuration of models manufactured from 2000 onwards to have the CDI power controlled by the Orange (switched) output of the LR voltage regulator module. Check the support parts. Examine all the connections and wires connected to the power pack. Tighten all loose connections and make sure the components connected to the power pack are functioning correctly. Step 2 Probably the most overlooked part of the ignition system the trigger sends a signal to the CDI unit (power pack or switchbox) and tells it when to release voltage to the coil. A faulty trigger will result in no or intermittent spark and is often misdiagnosed as a fault with the power pack. Power Packs, CDI Units, for OMC, Johnson and Evinrude outboard motors. ...
